Every tool in this category prints a key and a number. What separates them is what happens on the material that is actually hard — and you cannot tell which is which from a feature list, because the failures are silent. A wrong key does not come with a warning; it comes with a confident font.
Here is what to test, and how.
1. Does it measure tuning, or assume it?
This is the biggest single source of wrong key readings, and almost nothing advertises how it handles it.
Key detection works by measuring how much energy sits at each of the twelve pitch classes. If the material sits slightly off concert pitch — off A = 440 — that energy smears across two neighbouring pitch classes, and a tool that assumes standard tuning will land one key over.
Off-tune material is completely routine. Sample packs are recorded, resampled and bounced off pitch all the time. Anything pitch-shifted is off the grid by definition — pitch a loop up two and a half semitones and it is no longer at concert pitch. Vinyl rips drift. Tape drifts.
The test: take a loop you know the key of. Pitch it up 50 cents in your DAW. Bounce it. Analyse both files. If the answer changes into a different key, the tool is assuming rather than measuring.
What good looks like: the key holds, and the tool tells you the material is 50 cents sharp. That second number is often the more useful one, because it tells you what to do next. DropWave reports it in cents beside the key.
2. Does it tell you when a call was close?
Key and tempo detection are decisions between candidates. Sometimes the winner is streets ahead; sometimes two answers were nearly tied. A tool that presents both cases identically is throwing away the single most useful thing it knows.
"A minor, possibly C major" is something you settle by ear in ten seconds. "A minor" when the two were nearly tied is a coin flip formatted as a fact, and you find out about it two hours later when the bassline is fighting the sample.
The test: analyse a drum loop. It has no key — there is no tonic in a hi-hat pattern. A tool that prints a confident key for it is telling you its confidence display is decorative.
What good looks like: a low band and a named alternative. DropWave names the runner-up whenever the call was close.
3. Does it handle half and double time honestly?
174 or 87? 140 or 70? Both grids fit the audio, and which one is "right" is a question about how you count the track, not about the signal.
The useful behaviour is to name the alternative. The unhelpful behaviour is to pick silently — that is a decision about your music being made without telling you it was made.
Separately, there are genuine tempo errors: 103 read as 137 is not a metrical preference, it is a grid that lines up with a plausible subset of the hits and is simply wrong. These show up most on material where the kick is sparse and the rest of the percussion carries the pulse.
The test: find a track with a real breakdown — eight bars where the kick drops out. A tool reading the pulse only from the low end loses the grid there.

4. Does your audio leave your machine?
Worth deciding deliberately rather than by default.
Producers routinely work on material that is not theirs to send anywhere — client stems, unreleased records, things under NDA. Uploading a file to find out what key it is in is a decision, and most workflows make it without ever presenting it as one.
The test: turn off your Wi-Fi and analyse a file.
What good looks like: it works, because nothing about the analysis needed a connection in the first place. DropWave never connects to the internet at all — there is no account, no telemetry and no licence check, so the question never comes up.
5. And then: how many actions is it?
Not correctness, but it decides whether you use the thing.
The question you have most often is "can I use this loop in this session?" — and you have it a hundred times a week. If answering it means importing, scanning or waiting, you will stop asking and start guessing.
One drag should be the whole interaction. Better still: never leave the session at all — insert an analyzer on the channel and read the key while the track plays.
A five-minute test set
Build this once and keep it. Five files:
- A loop you know the key of, and the same loop pitched 50 cents.
- A drum loop with no pitched content.
- A track with a real breakdown.
- An a cappella or exposed vocal.
- A finished master you know the loudness of.
Run everything you are considering through those five. The differences that matter show up immediately, and none of them appear on a feature list.
