The problem nobody else's key finder mentions
Your samples are detuned, and it changes the answer.
Key detection works by measuring how much energy sits at each of the twelve pitch classes. When material sits slightly off concert pitch, that energy smears across two neighbouring classes — and a tool that assumes A = 440 will hand you the key next door, confidently, with nothing to suggest anything went wrong.
This is not rare:
- Sample packs are routinely recorded, resampled or bounced off pitch.
- Anything pitch-shifted is off the grid by definition.
- Vinyl rips drift. Tape drifts. Old hardware drifts.
DropWave measures the tuning before it decides anything, corrects for it, and then tells you what it found. A reading of "A minor, measured at −38 ¢" gives you the key and the fact that the file is a third of a semitone flat — which is often the more useful half, because it tells you what to do next.
Try it yourself against anything else: take a loop you know, pitch it 50 cents in your DAW, bounce it, and analyse both.

When a file has no key
Said plainly, because nothing else in this category says it:
- Drum loops and percussion have no key. You will get a reading; the confidence band is what tells you not to use it.
- A minor and C major contain the same notes. If the named alternative is the relative key, both are defensible and your ear decides.
- Tracks that modulate have more than one key.
