What it is
The Camelot wheel takes all 24 musical keys and renames them as a number from 1 to 12 and a letter:
- A — minor keys, inner ring.
- B — major keys, outer ring.
8A is A minor. 8B is C major.
Underneath it is the circle of fifths. The renaming exists so that using it needs no theory: instead of knowing that the relative major of A minor is C major, you know that 8A and 8B share a number.
The one rule
From any position, three moves are safe:

The numbers wrap: 12A → 1A is legal, and so is 1A → 12A.
That is the entire system. Positions far apart on the wheel will fight; positions one step apart will not.

Using it as a DJ
The obvious use. Read the position of what is playing, pick your next from the three lit ones.
Beyond that, the moves have character:
- +1 raises the energy. The standard build move; stacking several is how a set climbs.
- −1 relaxes without deflating.
- A → B at the same number brightens the mood — same notes, major centre.
- B → A darkens it.
- +7 (or −5) jumps a perfect fifth. It breaks the adjacency rule and works anyway. Use it once, not four times.
Using it as a producer
Same idea, different order. You are not choosing a next track — you are deciding whether a sample belongs in a session.
- Session in 8A, sample in 9A? Drop it in.
- Session in 8A, sample in 3A? Five steps away. It will clash. Pitch it or leave it.
- Two loops you want to build from? Check them against each other before you start arranging, not after.
The Camelot code is also the most useful thing you can put in a filename. 11A_pad.wav sorts next to 11B and 10A in any directory listing, so harmonically related material physically clusters. Key names never sort that way.
Where the rule stops applying
Worth knowing, because treating the wheel as law produces boring sets and timid arrangements.
- It is about note content, not arrangement. Two tracks in 8A can still clash if their basslines occupy the same register and phrase.
- Percussive material has no key. A drum loop mixes with anything; the wheel has nothing to say about it.
- Plenty of great transitions break it. If the clashing element is buried or filtered out, the rule is moot.
- Enharmonics are the same position. A♭ minor and G♯ minor are both 1A.
The failure nobody mentions
A wrong key gives you a wrong Camelot code, and then the whole system points you at the wrong three positions.
The usual cause is detuning. Sample packs sit off concert pitch routinely, and anything pitch-shifted is off by definition. A tool that assumes standard tuning lands one key over — which is one or more Camelot positions over.
